The Witcher is based on the book series by author Andrzej Sapkowski. After the Polish game studio CD Projekt Red made 3 very successful games based on these books, Netflix became interested to make a TV-show, showing the mythical world of magic, beasts and potions.
The Witcher is starring Henry Cavill as protagonist Giralt of Rivia, The Witcher. He is supported by English actress Freya Allan playing Ciri and Anya Chalotra as sorceress Yennefer of Vengerberg. The first season of the series was filmed in Poland, Hungary, Austria, and Spain.

Mafilm Studios, Budapest, Hungary

The series starts with a chain of events in Blaviken, where Geralt earns his nickname as Butcher of Blaviken. Blaviken was shot at Mafilm Studios just north of Budapest. The sets of Stregobor's house and the Cintran hall were built here, but from the outside there's not much to see.
Jaki Chapel, Budapest, Hungary

The magically disguised home of wizard Stregebor is located in Jaki Chapel, just next to Vajdahunyad castle near Budapest. Don't go straight to the courtyard, the chapel's medieval outside architecture and the caste are worth a visit as well.
Fort Monostor, Komárom, Hungary

Fort Monostor is a 19th century fortress located near Komárom, at the Donau river. It's the home of Ciri. The outside of the fort is where the Nilfgaard invasion was filmed.

The academy of Aretuza
La Palma, Spain

The sorcerers school of Aretuza is located at the Roque de Santo Domingo, a small island at the coast of La Palma (one of the Canary Islands). La Palma itself is certainly woth a visit. It's landscapes diverse from volcanic moon landscape to green jungles. Fun facts: the Tarzan movies featuring Johnny Weismuller were also shot here, and Madonna's "La isla bonita" was inspired by the island's beauty.

Szentendre Skanzen open air museum, Hungary

The village appearing at the beginning of S01E02, was shot in the Szentendre Skanzen open air museum. Also S01E07 scenes with Ciri next to a windmill were filmed here. The museum is located just north of Budapest and has a lot of traditional houses, a church and a windmill on display.
Construction of the museum has been taking place since 1976 with an area of 44 hectares. Nearly a hundred farms and other buildings have now been opened to the public. The museum gives a representative picture of the characteristic architectural styles in the Hungarian countryside from the 18th to the 20th century.
Some of the buildings are authentic. They were demolished in various places in the country and rebuilt in the museum. Other buildings are reconstructions. Two country sections have already been completed. The first part of the country is Transdanubia; this consists of houses, farms, stables, etc. that were located west of the Danube. The second part shows the architectural styles of East and Northeast Hungary. You can also see buildings from Transylvania.
Castle Vizima, Temeria
Kreuzenstein Castle, Austria

In episode 3 'Betrayer Moon', we see the abandoned castle Vizima in the icy kingdom of Temeria. The castle was filmed at Kreuzenstein Castle (Burg Kreuzenstein) in Austria. Located around 20 miles north of Vienna near the Danube river, it was rebuilt in the 19th century on the remains of an early medieval fortress. The interiors of Wyzima, where the striga fight takes place, were filmed at Origo Studios in Budapest.
The castle was constructed on the remains of an early medieval castle that had fallen into disrepair and was then demolished again during the Thirty Years' War. It was rebuilt in the 19th century by Count Nepomuk Wilczek. Kreuzenstein is an interesting structure, beacause was constructed out of sections of medieval structures purchased by the Wilczek family from all over Europe to form an authentic-looking castle. Thus, the castle can be considered both a 'neo-' and 'original' medieval structure.
Kiscelli Museum, Hungary

The great hall of Aretuza, where Yennefer shows her new body after the transformation, is an old 18th century monastery at the Kiscelli Museum just north of Budapest. This historical place has been reconverted into an art gallery. Also the conclave of the Northern Mages was filmed here.
The museum has a rich collection of pictures and maps about Budapest's urban history.
Los Tilos, La Palma

The forest where Ciri meets the dryads was filmed in the jungles of La Palma island. The forest of Los Tilos is an explosion of biodiversity and greenery. It's a jungle where it is quiet and where it smells of fresh foliage. Los Tilos (or Los Tiles, the official name) is one of the few remaining strongholds of laurel forest in the world, a jungle full of leafy trees with a broad leaf that was abundant on the planet millions of years ago. That is why Los Tilos became a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 2002, a protection that applies today to the entire island of La Palma.
Maspalomas, Gran Canaria

After Ciri drinks the sap of Shan-Kayan, the is teleported to a desert with a giant magical tree. These scenes were filmed at the dunes of Maspalomas. The dunes are without a doubt the biggest crowd puller among the thousands of tourists who come to Gran Canaria every year. It is a protected nature reserve of 5 square kilometers. According to writings, the dunes are said to have acquired their current shape through a tsunami that took place in 1755 after an earthquake.
Due to the ever-present north-east wind, grains of sand have accumulated over the years, resulting in "walking" dunes. Today the dunes are more to the south than 40 years ago, when the sand dunes stretched much more to the north. The golden-yellow sand consists of crushed lime and shells supplemented with volcanic sand. When you see the dunes for the first time, you immediately think of the Sahara.
The section of the episode where Yennefer is protecting Queen Kalis of Lyria, opening multiple portals, was filmed in several locations on Gran Canaria island. The desert scene was also shot in Maspalomas.
Roque Nublo, Gran Canaria

The fight in the top of a mountain range, featuring huge rocks, is the Canarian landmark Roque Nublo. With a height of 80 meters, this monolith is a natural phenomenon caused by a volcanic eruption. The rock is characterized by beautiful contrasting colors. From Cruz de Tejeda you have a beautiful panoramic view of this world famous rock. Roque Nublo is located at an altitude of 1813 meters.
Guayedra beach, Gran Canaria

Guayedra beach is where Yennefer end's up after the portal chase and where she buries kalis' baby. It's of the most beautiful protected landscapes of Gran Canaria because of the geological value, the flora and fauna. Near the village and the port of Agaete, the ravine with the same name as the beach already draws from the motorway in the northeast. The presence of palm trees and other plants, the volcanic black sand, the spectacular cliffs and the view of the Teide paint an attractive picture.
